How to prepare for a tarot reading so you get a useful answer

Five things to do before your session — framing your question, settling your state, and what not to ask.

The reader does the reading. But how much you get out of it is decided before the session starts.

1. Narrow the question

One clear question beats five loose ones every time, especially in a 45-minute online session. If you have five, rank them and start with the one whose answer changes the other four.

2. Ask about your own choices, not other people's

“What is my colleague planning?” is a weak question. “How should I handle this colleague over the next three months?” is a strong one. The cards read the situation you are inside; that is where your leverage is anyway.

3. Settle before you sit down

Five minutes of quiet. Not a ritual — just enough that you arrive as yourself rather than as the last stressful thing that happened to you.

4. Decide what you actually want to hear, then let go of it

Most of us book a reading already hoping for one answer. Naming that hope privately, before the session, makes it much easier to hear something different without arguing with it for twenty minutes.

5. Keep a note afterwards

Write down the two or three next steps while they are fresh. Six weeks later, that note is how you will know whether you acted on the reading or only enjoyed it.

A note on timing

There is no unlucky day to get a reading. But there is a bad moment: the hour immediately after a fight, when what you want is comfort rather than clarity. Comfort is worth having — it is just not what a reading is for.
